The other challenge with writing youth dialogue is that youth slang is intensely regional in addition to being heavily amorphous due to the passing of time.
Do we know if there are any Black head writers on this team at all? Did Square even consider the importance of diversity in the writer's room? I don't know the answer to this question, I'm legitimately asking because almost every Forspoken writer I've seen so far has been a white person in their 40s or 50s. It feels a lot better.įorspoken seems to be running into the same problem LiS1 did, which is having a bunch of mostly middle-aged white writers (Whitta, Hennig and Stashwick are all in that core demo) trying to write "approachable" dialogue for a young Black woman and not knowing how to do that, so they just fall back on the same post-Whedon "approachable self-aware humor" style as a lot of TV writers in the early 2000s did. These games feel less like "a bunch of writers who aren't anything like the main character trying to write naturalistic dialogue for the main character" and a lot more like.just people. Tell Me Why's dialogue is a lot cleaner because it feels like the actors themselves had a lot more input in the way their characters talked, and LiS: TC (despite being from a different developer than the other two games) shows a marked improvement over its predecessor because the character work feels a lot less governed by several layers of conflicting intent.
Truthfully, LiS1 just has this dialogue feel of "a bunch of middle-aged French men trying to sound like an American 17-year-old girl from the Pacific Northwest".
